Gratitude and Grumbling

March 23, 2025 / Phil Ortego / Exodus 15-17

Today we find ourselves in chapters 15, 16 and 17:1-7. I want to remind you of two very important principles I pointed out early in this study. These are two principles we need to get hold of as they will orient our lives as believers. I want to beat this drum as many times as I can as we go through this study.

  1. God has a good and perfect plan, but rarely does his plan work out the way we think it should.
  1. God is self-defining; he reveals his nature and character to us.

Why Believers Should Sing Songs of Praise

  1. Every believer should sing because of God’s .
  • Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, “I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” – (Exodus 15:1)
  • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ” – (Colossians 3:16)

  1. Every believer should sing God and God.
  • Exodus 15:1-5, 18 – God.
  • Exodus 15:6-17 – God.

“Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water.”  – (Exodus 15:22)

God Tests His People

Test # 1: (Exodus 15:22-27)

Test # 2: (Exodus 16:1-36)

  • It was (11-15)
  • It was (16-30)
  • It was (31-36)
  • It was (Deuteronomy 8:2-3)

Test # 3: (17:1-7)

A Cycle of Gratitude and Grumbling

Abundance …. we

Expectation … we

Disappointment … we

Complaint ….. we

Provision ……. we

Jesus In the Wilderness

  1. Jesus passed the test in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2-3)
  2. Jesus is the bread of eternal life (John 6:25-59)
  3. Jesus is the Rock that was struck for our salvation (I Corinthians. 10:1-5)
