Deeper Devotion – We Engage In Worship

October 13, 2024 / Phil Ortego / John 4:20-24

Worship is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in all the Scriptures. That’s because people have their own definition of what constitutes worship. Jesus gives us a clear picture of the kind of worship the Father seeks.

“Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” John 4:20

“Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father.’ John 4:21

‘You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews.’ John 4:22

‘But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.’” John 4:23

What is Worship?

Biblical worship flows from an internal desire to ascribe worth, honor, devotion and adoration to God that is expressed through a physical and emotional response, grounded in revealed truth from his word.

  1. Biblical worship is .
  2. Biblical worship is to God.
  3. Biblical worship is in nature.
  4. Biblical worship is in God’s to us in his word.

Truth without emotion produces dead orthodoxy and a church full of artificial admirers. On the other hand, emotion without truth produces empty frenzy and cultivates shallow people who refuse the discipline of rigorous thought. True worship comes from people who are deeply emotional and who love deep and sound doctrine. Strong affections for God rooted in truth are the bone and marrow of biblical worship.”   — John Piper

“Come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.” Psalm 95:6-7

2. I should worship privately.

“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” Mark 1:35
