Walking as Godly Children

May 19, 2024 / Phil Ortego / Ephesians 6:1-4

Our children are growing up in a different kind of world than the one we experienced. They live in a world filled with conflict, crisis, and a great deal of confusion. As a result, children are more defiant today than at any other point in our nation’s history. What has contributed to such defiance and disrespect? I believe there are at least three reasons our children are quickly declining into depravity:

3 Reasons Children Demonstrate Disrespect:

  1. A that controls them.
  2. A that misleads them.
  3. A that enables them.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4)

The key word for children is obey!

Walking as Godly Children

1. The of obedience.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

  • Obedience is not an .
  • Obedience is not limited to a certain .
  • Obedience is not reserved for .

2. The of obedience.

“Honor your father and mother…”

Where obedience is the action that is right for children, honor is the attitude that is right for children.

3. The of obedience.

(this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. (Ephesians 6:2b-3)

  • You will enjoy a quality life: that it may go well for you
  • You will enjoy a quantity of life: that you may live long on the earth.

4. The & of parenting children.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

  • Don’t use a parenting style that will disrupt a child’s ability to learn obedience.
  • Do develop a plan that will enable a child to succeed with respect to obedience.
