Walking as a Godly Husband

May 12, 2024 / Phil Ortego / Ephesians 5:25-32

Having already given instruction for walking as a godly wife, Paul now gives some radical instruction to men. As we continue in our study, the worthy walk for a man is:

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25-27)

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. (Ephesians 5:28-30)

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:31-33)

The key word for men is .

Three Principles for Walking as a Godly Husband.

  1. I am to love my wife with .

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”   (I Peter 3:7)

  • Consideration: in an understanding way.
  • Courtesy: showing honor to the woman.
  • Carefulness: as the weaker vessel.
  • Communion: since they are heirs with you of the grace of life.

          2. I am to love my wife with .

  • It’s a love: gave himself up for her.
  • It’s a love: He might sanctify her.
  • It’s a love: husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies.
  • It’s a love. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.

         3. I am to love my wife with a .

  • We are in Christ. “because we are members of His body.” (30)
  • I am to be a picture of to my wife.

“This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.” (32)
