Walking in the Spirit

April 28, 2024 / Jeff Poteat / Ephesians 5:18-21

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:18-21)

Whatever will .

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery… (Ephesians 5:18)

Rampant

Pervasive

Destructive

13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.” (Luke 15:13)

Do not be drunk with wine but be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

Whatever fills you will control you.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:16-17)

To be filled with God’s Spirit is to be filled with His Word. And as we are filled with God’s Word, it controls our thinking and action, and we thereby come more and more under the Spirit’s control. (MacArthur, 252.)

Whatever fills you will control you.

Church

addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,..

“16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom…” (Colossians 3:16)

Is it evident by the words and ways I speak that my mouth is controlled by the Spirit of God?

Church

“You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.” (Psalm 4:7)

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1)

Is it evident by my joy filled engagement in musical worship that my heart is controlled by the Spirit of God?

Church

20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Ephesians 5:20)

“16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Is it evident by my grateful outlook that my mind is controlled by the Spirit of God?

Church

The only leaders qualified to lead are those who have learned to serve.
