Walking in Wisdom

April 21, 2024 / Phil Ortego / Ephesians 5:15-17

For the past few weeks we’ve been in a series entitled Walking Worthy. It is based upon Ephesians chapters 4-6 where we are called to walk in a manner worthy of the call we have received in Christ. We have seen that:

  1. We are to walk in unity.
  2. We are to walk in love.
  3. We are to walk in light.

As we continue in chapter five, we come to yet another stride of our heavenly Father. As we seek to imitate him:

          4. We are to walk in .

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:15-17)

What is Wisdom?

  1. Wisdom is much more .
  • Knowledge is the of information.
  • Wisdom is the right of knowledge.
  • God walks in perfect and .

With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding. (Job. 12:13)

“The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens.”  (Proverbs 3:19)

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (Romans 11:33)

          2. God is the of all wisdom.

For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright. (Proverbs 2:6)

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5)

When we come to faith in Jesus as Lord, we are granted a wisdom we did not have prior to salvation. Paul writes in I Corinthians 30:

And because of him (God) you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. (I Corinthians 1:30_)

           3. Wisdom begins as we seek to the LORD.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. (Psalm 111:10)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. (Proverbs 9:10)

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” (Psalm 14:1)

Wisdom is seeking to honor God by rightly applying his truth and principles to all areas of our lives.

Three Characteristics of Walking in Wisdom:

  1. It is a walk. “be careful how you walk, not as unwise but as wise…”
    1. We can become foolish by walking in .
    2. We can become foolish by walking in .
    3. We can become foolish by walking in .

          2. It is a walk. “making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”

We all have: 24 hours each day – 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds.

The average person lives 77 years; 28,000 days; 670,000 hours; 40,000,000 minutes.

          3. It is a walk. “but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

When it comes to the will of God there are two aspects of God’s will for believers.

  1. God’s will.
  2. God’s will.
    1. His Word.
    2. Prayer.
    3. The Holy Spirit.
    4. Circumstances.
    5. People.
