God’s Grace is Greater Than Stubborn Sin

November 12, 2023 / Phil Ortego / Romans 6:1-14

Romans: The Gospel of God

God’s Grace is Greater Than Stubborn Sin

As we come to chapter six, Paul is once again expecting an argument. This argument does not come from Jews about the law, but from people who do not understand free grace. And their argument stems from the last two verses of chapter 5. Let’s go back and review how Paul ended chapter five.

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:20-21

Paul anticipates this question from grace abusers, so he clarifies for all of us that God’s grace is greater than stubborn sin. How does Paul address these issues for us?

  1. Paul addresses an  practice.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue to sin that grace may abound? By no means! Romans 6:1-2a

  1. Paul provides for why all stubborn sin is incompatible.

By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4

a. We have to .

b. We have been into Jesus’ death by baptism.

c. We are with Jesus’ resurrection by baptism.

3. Paul gives us the of our union with Jesus.

a. We are to live the life. Romans 6:5-7

b. We are to live the life. Romans 6:8-10

4. Paul gives three  for the Believer:

1. . Romans 6:11

2. . Romans 6:12

3. . Romans 6:13-14
