A Woman For All Times

May 10, 2026   /   Phil Ortego   /   1 Samuel 1:1-28   /   Scotts Hill Baptist Church

Today we look at one of the most celebrated mothers in the Bible. Her story is perhaps the most preached story on every Mother’s Day. Her name is Hannah and her story is found in the opening verses of the O.T. book of I Samuel.

4 Characteristics of a Godly Woman

  1. Hannah learned how to handle (I Sam. 1:1-7).
  • “We can ignore pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” – C.S. Lewis

  1. Hannah learned how to model (I Sam.1:8).
  • “And Elkanah her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” – I Sam. 1:8
  • Pain that is placed in the hand of God develops patience.

  1. Hannah learned how to walk in (I Sam.1:9-18).

  1. Hannah knew how to keep her promise (I Sam.1:22, 28).
  • “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the LORD and dwell there forever.” – I Sam. 1:22
